Commentary: Kobe Bryant? Well the Mavs preseason just got a WHOLE LOT more interesting... Posted by paul on Thursday, October 18 @ 14:54:01 EDT (1676 reads) Topic Mavs News
| The rumors are swirling around the player once known as the Drama Queen. The LAkers star is rumored to want out of LA, and guess which team is the #1 on his list? The Mavs. The Mavs would need to part with Josh Howard, JET and more to do it, but imagine Kobe Bryant in a Mavs uniform on the floor with Dirk...Weirdness abound. BTW, if this deal does go down, the hotel managers around Big D need to talk to all of their female employees regarding their behavior around a potential #8...

Buck sent to Minnisota for Trenton Hassel? Mario Elie? Posted by paul on Saturday, September 29 @ 17:16:55 EDT (2610 reads) Topic Mavs News
| Seems I did a story similar to this a few years back...The Mavs are looking to upgrade their two guard position, so they ship off an ineffective Greg Buckner. Close enough...Farewall, Buck, alas I knew you well...Greg never got near to being the effective player he was in Denver that prompted the Mavs to reaquire him. He played decent defense, but it didn't make up for his lack of offense. Trenton Hassel? 6-5, a defender of some repute, averaged 6.7 point per game last year...
The Mavs have signed Mario Elie as an assistant coach. Elie is considered an Avery Johnson-esque coaching prospect. He has insight into the Warriors and Spurs as he has spent time on their bench since his retirement...

Big win in Detroit... Posted by paul on Sunday, March 18 @ 18:28:27 EDT (4351 reads) Topic Mavs News
| This was a must have, if there is such a thing in March...The Mavs had dropped two in a row before getting past the Celtics on Friday. Then they had to get to Detroit for a national television game against the Eastern conference leading Pistons. No Devean George, no Greg Buckner. On the other hand, the Piston's were missing Chauncey Billups, one of their main scorers and leaders. It wasn't easy, but, in the end, the Mavs did what they had to to win. Despite another late FT miss by Dirk (paging Holger Geschwindner, please report to New York city to give Dirk some guidance, I am sure Mark Cuban will foot the bill), and another defensive lapse against the three-point shooters, the Mavs still had enough finish the game.
-Things I liked: -Devin Harris and his three-point shot. Not quite there yet, but it is getting closer. Every time he knocks one of those down, he makes a step towards becoming a tremendous weapon. If the defense can't play off of him, that really changes the Mavs game for the better. -Jerry Stackhouse really seems to want to win that ring this year. He sometimes looks like the old Stack who played in Detroit, a fierce scorer and threat from anywhere. -JET, when he had to, he knocked those FT's down. -Dirk missed that one late, but looked like Dirk needs to.

Lucky number 13... Posted by Paul on Saturday, January 06 @ 00:30:14 EST (5398 reads) Topic Mavs News
| The Mavs ran their current win streak to 13 games. Which is nice, but it is less about the win streak as it is about beating the hated Spurs in SA. What a game. This was a tough game on the schedule. In SA, second night of a back-to-back, national TV, Bill Walton in the house. Tough indeed. But the Mavs prevailed and now they are off to face Kobe and the LAkers in LA...

Any night you beat the LAkers is a good night... Posted by paul on Thursday, December 14 @ 00:42:36 EST (3927 reads) Topic Mavs News
| I really dislike Kobe Bryant and the LAkers...Though recently I have been more angry at the NBA's treatment of Dwayne Wade. Regardless, it was good to see Josh Howard and Greg Buckner do a decent job keeping Bryant off balance and annoyed. Sure, the LAkers were on the second game of a back-to-back. And yes, the game last night was a tough one for them. But, Kobe likes to beat the Mavs, and even went to his Drama Princess (Credit Mike Fisher at Dallasbasketball.com for that title) persona by throwing himself to the ground five or six times in the 4th quarter...Regardless, I like to see the LAkers lose and the Mavs win.

Mavs dig hole in Washington to end streak at 12 games... Posted by Paul on Monday, December 04 @ 23:19:49 EST (5466 reads) Topic Mavs News
| When you put yourself in a 30-point hole, in the second half, it is next to impossible to come back and win a game. So, the streak ended at 12 games when the Mavs found themselves down 31 points in the third quarter and never got it closer than 102-95. The Mavs made a push, but it was not enough. Hopefully they can reassemble themselves for game tomorrow night in New Jersey...

Last second block needed to keep streak alive at 10... Posted by Paul on Tuesday, November 28 @ 16:48:07 EST (3590 reads) Topic Mavs News
| Erick Dampier's blocked shot late in the fourth quarter saved the Mavs winning streak, with out a doubt. The Mavs had rolled their lead on the Twolves up to 17 points in the final period, only to allow Minnesota back into the game by taking a lot of long jumpers and basically playing not to lose. There is no better way to lose a game in pro sports than to play not to lose. They stopped attacking the basket and let the shot clock dictate how they played, and it almost cost them. Dampier and Josh Howard stepped up when they had to and the Mavs now have won 10 straight after going 0-4 to start the season...

Mavs run up win streak to 8 after beating the Spurs in SA... Posted by Paul on Friday, November 24 @ 23:10:18 EST (4926 reads) Topic Mavs News
| The Mavs started the season with a loss to the Spurs at home, and proceeded to lose the next three games and began the year 0-4. Since that 0-4 start, the Mavs have won 8 straight. Sure, a lot of those wins came against the likes of the Bulls, Wizards, Bobcats, the struggling Suns, and teams the Mavs are supposed to beat, but the Spurs are not a walk over. A tough, down to the wire game that reminded me of the Western Conference Semi-Finals last year, an important win that these Mavs needed to get if they are for real. A win they needed and got. Now, they need to avoid a let down against the Hornets.

Four losses in a row now four wins in a row... Posted by paul on Friday, November 17 @ 23:24:35 EST (3461 reads) Topic Mavs News
| Back to .500 for the Mavs after they upended the Memphis Grizzlies on the road. Back to even? A lot of the color commentators are talking about the how the Mavs started slow and are just now getting over the Finals from last year. YOU THINK? It might also have something to do with the fact that they played the Spurs (either the #1 or #2 team in the West), then Rockets (with a torrid Yao Ming), then the Nellie led Golden State Warriors (a toss up that could have gone either way) and then the LA Clippers (another Western Conference contender) in those four early losses. None are bad teams. Now they have beaten the Suns (the other Western Conference Finalist from last year though having their own issues), the Portland Trailblazers (meh), the Bulls (Eastern Conference semi-finalist last year) and now the Grizzlies. It is good to be back to .500, but the defense is still not there (close to 103 points per game for the opponents), and the offense is still lacking. It is a little glimmer of hope that the Mavs have played a little better even though Josh Howard is on the shelf. Let's hope that Dirk Nowitzki's offense keeps it up.

Commentary: Two wins in a row... Posted by Paul on Monday, November 13 @ 10:54:09 EST (4458 reads) Topic Mavs News
| Things look a little bit better with the Mavs now that their offense seems to be on track. 26 points from Dirk Nowitzki, 24 points from Jason Terry, 16 points from Jerry Stackhouse on Sunday night. In Phoenix, the JET scored 30, Dirk 35, 23 from Stackhouse, 10 from Devin Harris. The Suns win was impressive, considering that they were playing a tough rival on the road. Portland, well, was not so much. The Mavs should beat the Trailblazers. The real test will be against the Eastern Conference Playoff team the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday.
