Commentary: Nellie, Oden and Harris...

Nellie:  Nellie has always been about the money.  This is no secret, and now the Warriors are starting to see this.  Nellie will back with GS, and if he decides to hang it up, he will have a consulting deal for 5 years after he leaves.  Sound familiar?

Oden:  Microfracture surgery for the #1 pick in the draft.  His rookie season?  Well, that MIGHT be the 2008-2009 season now it seems.  Portland is now up there with the Celtics as a snake-bit franchise...

Devin Harris:  Devin needs to show a consistent jump shot if he is to be the permanent starter at the point.  He has the speed, and the ability to finish near the basket.  But as long as his jumper is off, teams can negate that.  That being said, it is good that he is locked up contract-wise.  One less distraction.

Make or Break: Game Four Tonight.

Not a whole lot to say.  The Mavs need to win this game to keep the series even and not put themselves in a desperate situation.  They are the defending Western Conference Champions, and had the best record in the league during the regular season.  True, they don't match up well against the Warriors, but it is time to stop making excuses.  Time to put up or shut up.  I know what I would do, but I am just a average schmuck with a website.

Commentary: Can the Mavs make the Warriors play the Mavs style?
Posted by Paul on Tuesday, April 24 @ 11:43:05 EDT (5580 reads)
Topic Opinion
Big vs. Small has been the talk of the town in the aftermath of the Mav's Game One loss to the Warriors.  Did the Mavs play into Nellie's hands in Game One?  Can Dampier and Diop make the difference?  That remains to be seen on Wednesday, which is looking very much like a must win game.  Sure, even if the Mavs drop Wednesday, they have at least two more games, but the next two would be in Oakland where the Warriors are almost as good as the Mavs at home (until Game One).  Going in there down 0-2 would be a disaster and a recipe to get swept out of the playoffs as a #1 seed against a #8, and to make this historic season infamous...

Commentary: Are the Mavs done? Knee-jerking?
Posted by Paul on Monday, April 23 @ 12:17:31 EDT (3597 reads)
Topic Opinion
If there is one team in the NBA playoffs that can give the Mavs fits, it is the Golden State Warriors.  Sometimes, an opponent with no discernible strategy are tougher to beat than a methodical team with superior skills or personnel.  I wonder if this is the case with the Mavs vs. the Warriors.  GS is a team of excellent improvisers.  They play very well in chaos, like a very good pickup team at the local rec-center.  They don't need to run a set offense.  They make it up as they go along, and they do a damn good job at it.  In Game One, do you think those huge three's that Baron Davis hit were drawn up by Nellie?  Or that block by Richardson (and his dirty collision under the goal on the much smaller Devin Harris) that lead to another killer three by the Last of the Californian Mohican's?  The question at hand though, is "Are the Mavs done?"  Not yet.  As the Dallas radio talkers are emphasizing, it was only ONE GAME.  Sure, it was a tough way to lose, but it was still one game and there will be another one on Wednesday.  That being sad, if Game Two is a repeat of Game One, the odds of the Mavs being finished are a hell of a lot better.

As for the local knee-jerking: "Fire Avery!"  "Trade Stackhouse!" "Shoot Dirk!"  People, calm down.  Like I said above, there is another game on Wednesday.  But, if the Mavs lose that one, I will probably be in there with the knee-jerkers.

Commentary: Joey Crawford done? Why not hire him?
Posted by Paul on Wednesday, April 18 @ 12:29:51 EDT (5226 reads)
Topic Opinion
Joey Crawford, a good ref, but saddled with a bad temper and a huge ego, is suspended indefinitely.  The popular opinion is that he is done as an NBA referee.  His confrontational style and general attitude towards the NBA authorities (read David Stern) may keep him off of the floor forever.  Ok, I can see it.  Crawford has always had a bug up his butt.  Not sure why, but he did.  No one says he is a bad ref, but he sometimes made himself part of the game instead of just enforcing the rules.  As I was driving into my day job, the thought occurred to me:  Why not hire Joey as a consultant to the Mavs?  He knows all of the current officials very well (and makes no secret of his dislike of some of them), he is considered an excellent referee rules-wise.  His insight might be valuable in games.  Mark Cuban has always said he wants to arm the Mavs with the best information possible.  That is why he trends the officiating.  It makes a lot of sense, to me at least, if a person who can provide valuable insight into the minds of the majority of officials in the NBA is available to hire, to hire said person.  If he is truly done as an NBA official, and if Joey Crawford is bitter about the way Stern treated him, don't you think he would consider a gig working for a man who is a pain in Stern's side.  A job that would allow him to spill the beans on some of his former colleagues who he dislikes?

Or is it just me?

Commentary: Foot off the gas?

Is it now the time for the Mavs to ease off the accelerator until the playoffs?  One win locks up the top seed in the West.  How many minutes should the Mavs be giving Dirk and Josh's ankles?  And Stack's knees?  And Damps shoulder?  The Clippers are in town, the current candidate for the #8 spot in the West and the Mavs first round opponents.  Is it time to give Mo Ager, Jose Barera, Pops Mensah-Bonsu, and Austin Croshere more minutes?  How about easing Kevin Willis into the rotation to see how much he has left in the tank?  Six more games until the real season begins....

Commentary: How good are the Mavs truly?
Posted by Paul on Wednesday, January 24 @ 13:00:55 EST (5365 reads)

They are approaching their THIRD double digit win streak.  When faced with a tricky Orlando line-up, Avery Johnson turned Dirk Nowitzki into a point-forward and it got the Mavs a win going away on the road in Orlando (where the Mavs are 2-7 after last nights game).  Oh, and Dirk flirted with a triple double.  Oh, and the Mavs are 35-4 since going 0-4 to start the season.  I see all of this, and the high level that the Mavs have been playing, and the fact that the NBA regular season is only half done and the Mavs are five wins short of 40 wins already.  I see it and I wonder how good is this team really?  How long can they keep this pace up?  Are they peaking too soon?  Or are they simply that good?  I see Avery making heavy use of his bench, not over working the big names.  I see JET in a slump, but the Mavs are STILL winning at a torrid rate.  Is this Mavs team that good?  Are they the LAkers or Bulls, you know, those teams that had 70 wins and won rings easily?  Did that step back in the Finals give these Mavs what they needed to take two huge steps forward?  I hope so.

Commentary: 9 in a row...Did the slow start help the Mavs more than it hurt them?
Posted by Paul on Monday, November 27 @ 11:47:15 EST (3533 reads)
Topic Opinion
There are the people out there who are pointing to the 0-4 start for this Mavs team, and saying it was what helped the Mavs put together this 9 game win streak.  I am not one of them.  The Mavs look almost like a different team since going 0-4.  The new guys are finding their place and Dirk is playing like Dirk, but I still don't like the slow start.  It put teams like the Rockets and Warriors in the mindset that they can beat the Mavs.  It also put the Mavs in a hole that REQUIRED them to win 9 in a row just to get back on pace with the Rockets and Spurs.  I don't like the fact that the new guys needed to find their place with the old guys.  Isn't that what the preseason is for?  Oh, yeah, the Mavs starters didn't play much together in the preseason.  I understand the thought process behind it: the season is a marathon not a sprint and any extra time that you can give them off in October, you potentially help yourself in June, especially after last year and the trip to the Finals.  I just don't like it.  I don't like them starting the season with a franchise record losing streak.  I don't like them digging a hole early, and potentially causing trouble for themselves down the stretch.  That being said, I am glad that they decided to immediately fill that hole and run off 9 (potentially more) wins now, instead of waiting until the second half to do it.
Here's hoping for #10 in a row tonight against the Twolves...

Commentary: Cuban vs. Nellie...
Posted by Paul on Tuesday, October 31 @ 11:25:13 EST (4293 reads)
Topic Opinion
To get things started, the business with Nellie and Mark Cuban.  I have read a lot of fan opinion on both sides as to who is right or wrong, and I have come to this conclusion.  They are both right and both wrong.  Mark Cuban has to be a demanding boss.  He is as smart as hell and has a lot of money to prove it.  He is a rich fan who bought his favorite team and turned it into a winner.  Could Nellie have done it alone?  I personally doubt it.  Nellie had been running the team for several years before Mark Cuban came into the picture, with little success.  He had gutted the Three J's and then turned my beloved Mavs into an inconsistent revolving door.  I hated him for it.  He had shipped off my favorite player, Jim Jackson, and brought in another guy who would become my favorite, Michael Finley.  He had Steve Nash, who looked like a bust, thanks to injuries, and would soon be drafting Dirk Nowitzki.  But the club ownership was disinterested at best, and Nellie's game plans were gimmicky and resulted in a low-mid grade quality product.  Not bad enough to get the top picks in the draft to get the Mavs moving back in the right direction, and not good enough to be anything but a has been.  Maybe it was just fate that Mark Cuban came in right when Finley and Nash were rounding into form and Dirk was showing signs as to what he could become.  Maybe, I know I was excited as hell when an owner who CARED bought the Mavs.  He was crazy and outspoken and made sure that everyone in the NBA knew it.  He gave Nellie the room to bring in head-cases like Vernon Maxwell and Dennis Rodman.  Guys who would bring fans to the games and put the Mavs on Sports Center or in USA Today.  It was Mark Cuban who took attention from the so-so Mavs, and let the media focus on his antics instead of a young team going through growing pains.  It was also Mark Cuban who was willing to spend the money to make deals for players and draft picks that the old Mavs ownership would have never attempted.  Nellie knew the league and Mark Cuban had the money and the will to make this team a winner.  Together they took the Mavs to the playoffs in 2001 for the first time in over a decade.  Give credit to Nellie, who put the Mavs on the road to winning, but it was Mark Cuban who bought the car, made sure it was a Lexus, and paid for the gas and snacks on the way.  You will never hear me say anything bad about Mark Cuban.  I give Nellie his props, but I still will never forgive him for gutting my team in the late 1990's, even if it had to be done.  The Mavs fans owe Nellie thanks and praise, but we owe Mark Cuban a lot more.

Dallasbasketball.com down but not out?
Posted by Paul on Thursday, October 26 @ 16:11:56 EDT (6204 reads)
Topic Opinion
Mike Fisher, journalist and radio personality (without a radio station right now), is responsible for the content at Dallasbasketball.com, which is either owned by the Mavs, or has inside deals with them for their promotion. Regardless, the site is having issues with its back end, which is ASP. ASP stands for Active Server Page and is Microsoft's old school dynamic website/database integrated solution. Long story short, I hope the Fish can get his site up and going again, maybe with a little more stable and up to date backend as well. In the meantime, I guess we will just be stuck with what we can get from the Dallas Morning News and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Oh, and if you want to go the the db.com forums you can do it here
